FreeCell

How to play FreeCell

The thinking person's solitaire. Every card is face up from the start, and almost every deal can be won.

The goal

Move all the cards to the four spaces marked A at the top right, building each suit from Ace up to King.

How to move cards
  • Put a card on one that is one higher and the opposite color.
  • The four free cells at the top left each hold one card while you work.
  • Any card can go into an empty column.
  • You can move groups of cards at once. The game works out how many.
Tips to win more
  • Free the Aces and 2s early.
  • Keep free cells empty when you can.
  • An empty column is worth more than a free cell.
  • Everything is face up, so plan a few moves ahead.

Questions

Can every FreeCell game be won?

Almost. Nearly every deal can be solved with careful play.

What are free cells for?

Each one holds a single card temporarily so you can reach the card underneath.

Why can't I move a big group of cards?

How many cards you can move depends on your empty free cells and columns. Empty more of them to move bigger groups.
